Assignment 1: Communications and the Internet

This report was written in Semester 2, 2007 for DECO1005. It is about the history and development of the Internet, E-mail and World Wide Web (WWW).

The development of widespread computer networks has opened many new techniques for communication since their inception during the 1960s. Since this time, these networks have been at the forefront of modern communications. Today, the Internet is continuing to provide a platform for new ways of communicating.

Internet technology today converges with traditional communications methods – telephone, television and radio – to become a universal platform for any kind of content or application. The Internet is becoming invisibly integrated into society, with individuals now owning several devices with potential Internet connectivity – including mobile devices such as mobile phones. These devices are capable of delivering new forms of communication, information and entertainment, faster than at any other time in history. This report outlines several major technologies and how they have contributed to changing both the Internet and society itself.
